I want to make a simple voodoo doll but...?

I do not have a sample of the person's hair, nail clipping or favorite item. What should I do? Should I print their picture and put it on the face of the doll? Or can it only work with a sample of the person's DNA or item? I know this question has probably been asked before, all I ask is for a simple yes or no answer, and please no rude comments or comments that contain sarcasm. Thank you.
