If i am employeed for just one day do I need to fill out a W-4?

I knew the job was just for one day and it paid $500. Five days later I get an email with a w-4 attached sayings they need it to pay me. I thought if you made under $600 a year companies are not required to send you a 1099. If so why would I need to fill out a w-4?
